OPERATION UP-LINK

The Veterans of Foriegn Wars  run operation up-link. The program sets up internet cafes in the United States near Military Posts and over seas in Afghanistan and in Iraq. The VFW has approximatley 600 sites set up and by the end of 2008, We will have 800 sites up and running. They allow deployed soldiers the oportunity to stay in touch with their loved ones back here in the States. POST 5180 IS PART OF THIS NETWORK. We HAVE INSTALLED  dsl, a computer complete with web cam and a wireless modem to help our surrounding friends and family stay in touch with deployed troops. We have done this without any help from National Headquarters or the State Headquarters. We thought that it was important enough to move forward now, rather than wait for assistance. The service is free to anyone that wishes to use it and is being advertised by the local media. The VFW and Ft. Benning have sites in Columbus and on post but has missed our Community. There are a lot of dependents living in the area along with friends of deployed troops that do not have access to this service without driving to Columbus and Ft. Benning. We saw a chance to close this gap and took advantage of it. If you know of someone that may need this service please let them know about us.

MAPS

MILITARY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The program was set up by The VFW to assist military families with their needs while their sponsor is deployed. . The program does more than any other program out there. A.E.R. tries but due to red tape and the requirement to submit applications along with having to pay back the money that is borrowed, it really only puts a band aid on the problem. MAPS however is very proactive in its approach and has helped many  a family in need. There is still a problem with getting the word out to the families. While Post 5180 can't solve all the problems, we have done our part in getting the information out to our surrounding community. We have furnished heaters for Families at no cost to them during the winter months and Our Commander is the Representative for district five and district six in Alabama. If you are aware of anyone needing help please contact

EVERY DOLLAR YOU DONATE BRINGS A VETERANS NEEDS, CLOSER TO BEING MET.

UN MET NEEDS PROGRAM

The VFW Un-Met Needs program was set up to take over in areas that the V.A. falls short in. The ramps for disabled veterans that the Post sponsors is a good example of a need for a service that is not taken care of by medicare or the V.A. The Post has a crew that goes out and builds ramps and other items that make life a little eaisier for our deserving Veterans. The National and or State head quarters bear part of the monetary burden for this service and re-imburses the Post for part or sometimes all of its expenditures. The labor burden is covered by volunteers and Most of the material is donated by members to save money. The Post will continue to support this program as long as we have good people to help out. If you would like to volunteer as a participant please contact the Commander and get on the volunteer list (mule team one). If you know of someone that needs this service please refer them to Mike Craig.
